Backline Workshops

Backline was founded in 2022 in Chicago, IL by two pals and long-time improv teammates, Mila Rao and Jane Brown. Mila and Jane hope to bring their love of improv and play to groups and teams across the country. They look forward to customizing an experience that’s right for you!

Bios

Mila Rao, Co-founder & Facilitator

Mila Rao is a Chicago improviser and comedian with 10 years of training and experience. She is an alum of The Second City, The Annoyance Theater, and CIC Theater’s training programs. She facilitates team-building and long-form improv workshops as well as teaches for Logan Square Improv’s training center. Mila hosts and produces a weekly community show at Logan Square Improv where you can also see her perform on the Sunday Show with her veteran improv team, Little Heroes. She has also performed with Charlie Buckets (CIC) and Carlos Angeles (Chicago indie team). Mila loves positive, grounded, relational, long-form improv. Most importantly, she loves playing with her friends and bringing improv to anyone who wants to share in it!

Mila is a licensed social worker and therapist in Chicago with a Master of Social Work and background in education, non-profit programming, and business administration.

Jane Brown, Co-founder & Facilitator

Jane Brown is a Chicago-based actor, standup comedian, and improviser with 8 years of training & performance experience. She’s trained at iO Theater, the Lincoln Lodge, the Chicago Improv Den, and CIC Theater and has performed with St. Gens (iO Theater), the Mall (CIC Theater), Big Mood (The Den) and Little Heroes (Logan Square Improv).  You can catch her performing weekly on the Sunday show with Little Heroes. On screen, she’s appeared in No New Friends and Undercover Cop for the Queer Sketch Show. 

Jane has over 10 years of experience in the accounting and finance industry, specializing in non-profits. She holds both a Bachelor's and Master's in Accountancy and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Kennedy Baldwin, Facilitator

Kennedy Baldwin is an improviser, writer and actor born and raised in Chicago. They attended Western Illinois University where they studied music business. She started taking improv classes at The Second City at the beginning of 2016 and has been in love with it ever since! In 2019, they completed the Severn Darden Graduate Program and in 2020 she was a recipient of the Bob Curry Fellowship at Second City. Kennedy now produces the smallprov show and performs on The Sunday Show at Logan Square Improv. She can also be found performing with The Second City Touring Company.

James Nicklas, Facilitator

James Nicklas is an improviser and comedian with 8 years of training and experience from The Second City, iO Theater, The Annoyance Theater, and CIC Theater. James has experience coaching both short-form and long-form teams and hosts the weekly Open Stage at Logan Square Improv. You can also see James perform at the Sunday Show at Logan Square Improv with his veteran improv team, Little Heroes. James loves grounded, long-form improv focused on positive relationship development and active listening. He has found improv to be a wonderful way to enjoy the act of play and support skills like active listening, public speaking, and working with others.

James is a licensed Occupational Therapist in Chicago with experience in education, adaptive sport, and youth development.

Rudy Mendoza, Facilitator

Rudy Mendoza is the founder of Bilingual Improv School, which offers Spanish language immersion through improv. He is also the founder of Antojitos Fest: Chicago's Bilingual Latine Comedy Festival. He is currently an understudy for The Second City e.t.c.’s 48th Revue “Best Kept Secret: Tell Everyone” and a teaching artist with Laughing Together, a California-based non-profit that focuses on bringing improv training to school-based mental health programming across the country.
